Dr. Kalfas follows a holistic approach to dentistry, with a broader, "whole body" focus to her treatment. She works with the principles of Neuromuscular dentistry. Traditional dentistry assumes that your current bite, the way that your teeth fit together, is best for you. It is your bite that dictates the position of your jaw joint, the Temporomandibular Joint, or TMJ. Neuromuscular dentistry takes into account the status and function of the muscles that control jaw position. Often, your bite is not "right" for you. If your teeth have been shortened from years of wear, if they have shifted or are malaligned, your bite can force your jaw into an uncomfortable position. This can lead to a myriad of symptoms which can include:

  • Pain and/or noise in the TMJ
  • Clenching or grinding
  • Facial pain
  • Headaches
  • Neck and back aches
  • Ringing and/or stuffiness in the ears
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing

Rather than relying on your present jaw position as being the best for you, Dr. Kalfas can use additional information to determine if your bite should left as is, or adjusted to a more optimal position. In Neuromuscular dentistry we use computerized equipment to measure and study the pattern of jaw movement. Muscle activity is monitored and measured. The computer can also record the noise made in the joint during normal movement.

A Myomonitor is then used, a device which painlessly exercises the muscles of the face and jaw. This stimulation will overcome the programming of your muscles and allow them to truly relax. Data is then gathered in this relaxed state.

All of the tests are non-invasive - there are no injections, no pain. Dr. Kalfas will compare the data from the current and relaxed states. She will then determine whether your present position is near optimal, or whether your bite should be adjusted to provide improved function.
